Me Before You by Jojo Moyes
Sarah Dessen, the author of The Truth about Forever, said “There is never a time or place for true love. It happens accidentally, in a heartbeat, in a single flashing, throbbing moment.” This rings true in Me Before You by Jojo Moyes. In a simple, elegant style, Moyes somehow captures the essence of love in ink. I do not know how she does it, but she takes readers on a journey that fills your heart with love. Except this love is not what you would expect. In fact, the romance between Louisa Clark and Will Traynor for most of the book is so subtle it's hard to recognize. However, in a mere chapter, it exploded into something absolutely beautiful. This is definitely a book I would consider reading again and again.
The book evolves around Louisa Clark, a spunky 28-year-old living in a tiny English village. When she loses her job at a local café, the Job Centre does not offer her many fulfilling occupations. Jumping from factory worker to fast food, she is out of luck. I laughed when her advisor suggested she would become a stripper. Finally, in desperation, she accepts a job interview to become a caregiver.
She discovers her client is the moody "ex-Master of the Universe" Will Traynor. (I affectionately referred to Will as "Traynor Wheels" while reading this book. I know, it's awful.) He's used to living the big life, but after a freak-of-nature accident, he is confined to a wheel chair as a quadriplegic. Lou discovers the reason she was hired was to try and convince Will that life was still worth living. Before his accident, Will was living life to the fullest with travel, extreme sports, and "lots and lots of sex". He sees his chair as a prison and has slowly shut himself up in his mind. In 6 months, Lou must convince him not to commit suicide. She accepts this challenge with determination and begins planning months of activities to get him out. However, Will, in the beginning, refuses to go anywhere, but slowly he opens up to more and more adventures.
Lou is someone I hope to be. She marches to the beat of her own drum and Will helps her become fearless again. Her love for Will is so pure that it makes the ending even more heartbreaking. I definitely recommend this book to everyone, especially those that enjoy a good tear-jerker. Me Before You made me believe in love again. Love, in every form, is beautiful and sometimes a person is placed in our life to show us how truly breathtaking it can be. It comes as a shock when that person though is not meant to stay in our lives forever. Please consider picking up this book. I assure you that you won't be able to put it down.
Now I'll have to pick up the sequel After You!
